Reference materials: Except for a Bible dictionary and a Bible atlas, the only non-Biblical reference that may be consulted is any reference that was available to a teacher at the time of the event. A commentary is just someone else's Bible study and your own study is just as valid. God wants to teach if He is given the chance.
Timeline: Within Scripture, only passages that were available at the time of a Biblical event may be used, except if a later Scripture specifically refers to the event, then that Scripture may be used.
Format: All teaching is done in the format that the passage is written. Stories are taught as story-telling. Letters are taught as exhortation. Prohecies are taught as messages. Etc.
Detail: Each passage must be taught completely in detail.
Description: Paint the hearer into the story. Everyone at an event and their reactions or responses must be accounted for whether Scripture mentions a person or not.
Stories: People remember stories better than points of a sermon. Everything Jesus did in the gospels created stories for people to tell.
Time: Content dictates time, time does not dictate content
Understanding: Teach for understanding of the passage, not for an concept (points of a sermon).
Common experience. Information that a Bible author left out can be understood by applying experiences that are common to all men. The applied common experience cannot change the truth.
Reasoned deduction. Information that a Bible author left out can be understood by applying reasonable deduction, the art of thinking. The deduction cannot change the truth.
Academic: No passage anywhere in Scripture was written to be academic. Academic teaching kills the story.
Creation: Teaching should create a memory for people to tell
Dot to dot: Studying Scripture is like playing dot-to-dot. The teacher or believer collects dots (remembers something of what he read or was taught). The Holy Spirit connects the dots. Read through the Bible yearly, 3 chapters per day to collect more and more dots.
Two Biblical Timelines: There is an event timeline and an author timeline. The author timeline affects the understanding of the event timeline. (That is why Genesis 1 is NOT the first time creation was ever mentioned. May the Lord bless you in finding what was the first time creation was written down and who wrote it.)
